First Responder Therapy: Essential Mental Health Support for Heroes

I provide individual therapy specifically designed for first responders, including law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS/paramedics, dispatchers, corrections professionals, and others working in emergency response and public safety.

About this service

First Responder Therapy

Individual therapy for emergency-response and public-safety professionals carrying occupational stress, trauma, or cumulative exposure.

I provide individual therapy specifically designed for first responders, including law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS/paramedics, dispatchers, corrections professionals, and others working in emergency response and public safety.

First responders experience things most people will never see, hear, or be asked to handle. One difficult call may have a lasting impact, but trauma can also develop through years of cumulative exposure to injury, death, violence, danger, responsibility for others, shift work, and repeatedly being present during the worst moments of people’s lives.

What it is

Individual therapy specifically designed for first responders, with treatment individualized to the responder, their experiences, symptoms, goals, and readiness.

Who it serves

Law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS/paramedics, dispatchers, corrections professionals, and others working in emergency response and public safety.

How it starts

I may begin with immediate symptom relief and coping skills, a particular critical incident, cumulative trauma, sleep and relationships, or reconnecting with life outside the professional role.

First responders may also consider the First Responders support hub, along with PTSD therapy, anxiety therapy, or anger management therapy when those concerns are part of the picture.

Common experiences

What You May Be Experiencing

  • “I can’t get that call out of my head.”

  • “I’ve seen worse. I don’t understand why this one got to me.”

  • “I’m always on alert. I can’t shut it off when I go home.”

  • “I don’t feel like myself anymore. My family notices it too.”

What therapy can look like

A place to set down the weight of the job

My work with first responders starts with understanding that culture. You should not have to explain or defend it in therapy. We may address occupational trauma and PTSD, critical incidents, cumulative trauma, anxiety and hypervigilance, nightmares and sleep difficulties, anger or changes in temperament, depression, grief and loss, substance use, relationship and family difficulties, burnout, moral injury, suicidal thoughts, or the realization that the things you have experienced are becoming harder to carry.

I provide a confidential space where first responders can step out of the professional role, lower their guard, and not have to be the strong one or keep everything contained. There's room here for vulnerability without judgment and to talk honestly about what the job takes out of you and what you carry home with you.

Beyond the uniform

A life beyond simply surviving the next call

Treatment is individualized to the responder, their experiences, symptoms, goals, and readiness. We may work on immediate symptom relief and coping skills, process a particular critical incident, address cumulative trauma from years on the job, improve sleep and relationships, work through beliefs or emotions connected to traumatic experiences, or help them reconnect with life outside of their professional role.

The goal isn’t to make someone forget what they’ve experienced or become unaffected by the work they do. The goal is to help them carry it differently so they can continue doing meaningful work, maintain relationships with the people they love, and have a life beyond simply surviving the next call.
