Addiction & Recovery Counseling: Moving Beyond the Cycle

You can work toward recovery without shame. I can help you look at patterns, support, and what comes next.

About this service

Addiction & Recovery Counseling

Individual counseling for alcohol or drug use, relapse, substance-use disorders, and compulsive behaviors affecting daily life.

I provide individual counseling for adults struggling with alcohol or drug use, substance use disorders, relapse, or compulsive behaviors that have begun interfering with their relationships, work, responsibilities, emotional health, or ability to live the life they want. This may also include concerns related to problematic or compulsive sexual behavior and pornography use.

I work with people at different stages of change and recovery. Someone does not have to have everything figured out, identify themselves as an addict, or be certain they want complete abstinence before coming to therapy.

What it is

Individual counseling for adults struggling with alcohol or drug use, relapse, substance use disorders, or compulsive behaviors affecting relationships, work, responsibilities, emotional health, or daily life.

Who it serves

Adults at different stages of change and recovery, including people who are unsure whether they want complete abstinence or are simply recognizing that a substance or behavior is becoming a problem.

How it starts

I begin by understanding what the behavior does for you, what need it meets, what feeling it quiets, and what happens immediately before and afterward.

If your concerns are connected to past experiences, trauma therapy for adults in Missouri can provide a broader starting point.

Common experiences

What You May Be Experiencing

  • “I don’t know if I have an addiction, but I know this is becoming a problem.”

  • “I keep telling myself I’m going to stop, and then I do it again.”

  • “I can stop for a while. I just can’t seem to stay stopped.”

  • “I don’t want someone to lecture me or tell me what I already know.”

Recovery support

A place to understand what is underneath the cycle

Assessment is an important part of the work. Appropriate clinical screening and assessment tools can help evaluate alcohol use, drug use, compulsive sexual behavior, and problematic pornography use while identifying severity, impact, and co-occurring mental health concerns.

Treatment is individualized. Goals may include abstinence and long-term recovery, harm reduction, increased awareness, or determining what relationship the client wants to have with a substance or behavior. When a higher level of care, medical detoxification, medication support, or additional recovery resources are needed, appropriate supports can be identified.

Therapy approaches and tools
Building a life worth protecting

Recovery is more than simply not using

Therapy may address triggers and cravings, relapse patterns, coping and emotional-regulation skills, trauma, shame, relationships, boundaries, accountability, rebuilding trust, developing support systems, and creating a life in recovery that feels worth protecting.

Recovery is more than simply not using or not engaging in a behavior. The goal is to understand what was underneath it, develop healthier ways of coping and connecting, and build a life where the substance or behavior no longer has to do the job it once did.
